The challenge
In emergency situations like wildfires or floods, every second matters. First responders need to coordinate evacuations quickly and accurately, while citizens need clear information about what to do and where to go. Zonehaven set out to solve this critical problem with technology, but they needed a mobile app that could reach citizens directly: AWARE.
The main challenge was designing and developing a mobile application that was extremely intuitive — in a real emergency, nobody has time to learn how to use an app — and that worked reliably even under limited network conditions.
Our solution
We collaborated with Zonehaven on the development of AWARE, their community-facing mobile application, using Next.js and React to create a fast, accessible experience built for critical moments.
What we built
- Zone identification: Users can instantly locate their evacuation zone through geolocation or address search
- Real-time evacuation status: Clear visualization of each zone’s status (evacuation order, warning, safe) with instant updates
- Push alerts: Immediate notifications when the evacuation status changes for zones the user follows
- Preparedness resources: Guides and checklists so citizens are ready before an emergency strikes
- Emergency interface: High-contrast design with large typography, optimized for use under stress and reduced visibility
Designed for emergencies
Every design decision was guided by one principle: clarity under pressure. We implemented a universal traffic-light color system, single-tap navigation, and content that prioritizes immediate action over secondary information.
Results
The Zonehaven platform was acquired by Genasys Inc., a global leader in mass communication systems. Today, Genasys technology (including Zonehaven) protects over 155 million people across more than 100 countries and all 50 US states. The platform has been featured in outlets such as Fox News, NPR, Inc. Magazine, and SF Gate.
